The Narrator Directory · long-form reading voices · empty today, and saying so

A directory for the voices that read for hours, organised around the three things a buyer actually chooses between.

Audiobook narration, audio description for accessibility, and recorded read-alouds for lower grades. Three crafts that a general voice-over listing treats as one category and a demo reel cannot tell apart. This directory is being built to list them by reading style, pacing, and the languages a narrator reads in — because those are the fields a buyer with a manuscript, a video timeline or a procurement obligation is genuinely deciding between.

It does not exist yet. There are zero listings at this address, no search, no profiles and no audio. What exists is the address, this page, and a written brief specific enough that you can hold it against whatever gets built.

No account, no waitlist number, no card. An early-access message reaches a mailbox, and that is the entire mechanism.

What used to be at this address, and why it is written down instead of quietly fixed

Until this page, typing thenarrator.directory did not fail. It resolved, it answered quickly, and it served a complete, well-built, roughly 148-kilobyte page about running a K-12 school district. A narrator looking for narration work read a school-operations pitch and reasonably concluded the domain was somebody else’s. Fourteen other owned addresses were serving that identical page at the same time.

That is a worse failure than a domain that does not answer. An address that does not resolve tells you nothing and costs you a moment. An address that resolves confidently into the wrong product tells you something false, and you believe it, because it looks finished.

It is recorded here rather than repaired in silence for one reason: this page is going to ask you to believe a set of promises about what it will never do. A page that had just quietly corrected its own worst mistake, and then opened by asking for trust, would be starting from a position it had not earned. So it starts from the mistake.

Who arrives here, and what they arrive wanting

Four different people type this domain, and they want opposite things from it. A narrator wants to know what it will cost them and what it will never do to them. Everyone else wants to find one person and stop looking. A directory that serves only the second group becomes an advertising business pointed at the first, which is how the established model works and why narrators distrust it. Both sets of answers are on this page, and the narrator’s set is first.

A working narrator

You want to be findable by the specific work you actually do, without paying for position, without being ranked against someone underbidding you, and without handing your voice to something that will learn it. You have been on directories before. You are here to find out what this one intends to charge for and what it intends to sell, and you would rather read the refusals than the pitch.

An accessibility buyer at a district or a public body

You have video that has to carry a described track, and an obligation with a criterion number attached to it. What you need is not a reel: it is somebody who can write to the gaps between dialogue, in the language your community actually speaks, at a pace your viewers can follow. You are choosing between people, and no general voice listing carries the fields that would let you.

A publisher, producer or independent author

You have a finished manuscript and a sense of the voice it wants. You need a narrator whose register fits the text and who can hold it for the length of a book, plus the practical answers: what they deliver, how pickups work, whether they proof, and what the schedule looks like. Range is easy to demonstrate. Consistency over thirty hours is the thing you are actually buying.

A school, library or curriculum team

You want read-alouds for lower grades, read by an adult professional, paced for a child who is still decoding text. You want to know who is reading and that the answer is never a student. That boundary is a standing refusal here, not a preference.

Three crafts that a single “voice over” category cannot tell apart

The established listings put all of this in one bucket, usually next to commercial reads and character work, and let a ninety-second reel stand in for every distinction. A reel is a good instrument for exactly one question: what is this person’s range. Long-form hiring turns on a different question entirely — can this person hold one register, in one room, at one distance from the microphone, across sessions weeks apart — and a reel is structurally incapable of answering it, because a reel is the best ninety seconds someone has.

Audiobook narration

What is being commissioned. A complete book read start to finish by one voice, delivered as mastered chapter files against a submission spec, with a retail sample.

The unit of work. The finished hour. A finished hour is several hours of studio, edit and proof time, commonly in the range of two to six depending on the density of the text and who is doing the editing.

The specialist skill. Stamina and consistency. A character read has to sound the same in chapter 31 as it did in chapter 3, recorded weeks apart, in the same room, at the same distance from the microphone.

How it goes wrong. Drift. Tone, pace and mouth noise move across sessions, a proof-listener catches it at chapter 22, and the fix is a pickup session that has to match the original room tone or it is audible.

Audio description

What is being commissioned. A described track for video: what is on screen, spoken into the spaces where nobody is speaking, so a blind or low-vision viewer follows the same story at the same time.

The unit of work. The gap. The script is written to the silences that already exist in the programme, and the timing is not negotiable.

The specialist skill. Compression under a hard constraint. You have the length of a pause to say what matters, in the order it matters, without editorialising the shot or stepping on the next line.

How it goes wrong. Overwriting. A describer who writes for the page rather than the gap produces a track that either collides with dialogue or has to be read too fast to follow, and the viewer loses both the description and the scene.

Recorded read-alouds

What is being commissioned. A book or passage read aloud for lower grades, as a recording a teacher or a family can play, paced for a listener who is still learning to decode text.

The unit of work. The passage or the title, not the hour. These are short and are commissioned in sets.

The specialist skill. Deliberate slowness that does not become condescension. Pacing is the whole job: enough room for a young listener to follow, without the sing-song register that adults fall into around children.

How it goes wrong. Reading at an adult pace and calling it warm, or over-performing every line until the text disappears behind the voice.

These three are adjacent and they do not substitute. A narrator who can carry a thirty-hour literary novel is not automatically the right person to write to a two-second gap in a fast-cut drama, and neither of them is automatically good with a class of six-year-olds. Listing them as one category is the field’s most expensive convenience.

The record shape — every field that will exist, and every field that will not

A directory is its field list. Everything else is presentation. Publishing the whole field list before a single listing exists is the most useful thing this page can do, because it is a commitment that is cheap to check later: if a field appears that is not below, or one of the refused fields shows up, you can see it from the outside without being told.

The three fields it is organised around

  • Reading styleNot a genre tag and not a personality adjective. The register a narrator actually holds for hours: plain and transparent, warm and close, dry and precise, dramatic and characterised. A buyer with a manuscript in front of them already knows which one the text wants; the field exists so they can ask for it directly instead of inferring it from a montage.
  • PacingThe single field the established model never carries, and the one that decides a long-form hire. A read-aloud for a six-year-old, a dense non-fiction chapter and a described track for a fast-cut drama are three different speeds, and a narrator who is excellent at one is not automatically usable at another.
  • Languages read inREAD IN, which is a stricter claim than speaks, and a much stricter claim than can perform an accent in. A buyer commissioning a Spanish-language description track needs to know a narrator reads unfamiliar text aloud fluently in that language, at speed, with correct stress. Which Spanish is part of the field, not a footnote to it.

Alongside those three, a listing will carry the plain practical facts a hire needs and nothing more: the crafts a narrator takes, whether they deliver mastered files to the common retail submission target or raw takes for somebody else’s edit, whether they proof their own work, how pickups are handled, and how to reach them. Those are logistics, not a portrait.

The fields it will not carry, and why each absence is deliberate

  • RateThere is no rate field and there will not be one. A published rate on a directory is the first component of an auction, and it is the listee who pays for it.
  • Rank, score or featured positionThere is no ordering to buy, so there is nothing to sell and nothing to game. The listing order will be a stated, boring rule, published on the page, not a judgement.
  • Review, rating or starThis directory cannot verify that a review came from a real booking, so it will not publish one. In a trade where a single manufactured review moves work, an unverifiable star is worse than no star.
  • Turnaround promiseA directory that publishes a turnaround commits a narrator to a deadline the directory has no part in. The schedule is between the narrator and the person hiring them.
  • Union or credential badgeThis platform runs no bureau, checks no credential and holds no union roster. A badge that stands for nothing is worse than no badge, so there is no badge.
Illustrative only — not a real listing. No narrator is listed at this address.

Crafts: audiobook narration, recorded read-alouds. Reading style: plain and transparent; warm and close for lower-grade work. Pacing: unhurried; comfortable with dense non-fiction; will not be pushed past the point where a listener stops following. Languages read in: English (native); Spanish (reads unfamiliar text aloud fluently, Mexican Spanish; does not perform other regional varieties). Delivery: mastered chapter files to the common retail submission target; proofs own work; pickups scheduled in the original room within the same month.

Invented for shape. There is no person behind it, no name attached to it, and it is not a preview of a listing that exists somewhere else.

Where this stops, and which address takes over

A directory that will not say what it excludes is a directory that intends to grow into whatever gets traffic. The line here is drawn on craft, not on convenience, and it was drawn before this page was written.

Character and animation voice work is not here

It sits at thevoiceactor.directory. That is a genuinely different hire: a casting decision about range, character and brief, judged from a performance. This address is for one voice reading one text for a long time, judged on stamina, consistency and pronunciation discipline. Neither address carries a listing today, so this is a boundary between two briefs rather than between two catalogues, and it is stated now so that it cannot be quietly redrawn later when one of them has traffic.

This is not the craft’s front door

voiceactor.network is the network page for voice work as a profession. It already names this address as its long-form companion, which is why the split is real rather than a distinction invented on this page to justify a second domain.

Not the people who wrote the words

An author writes the book; a narrator reads it; they are almost never the same hire and the estate keeps them on separate addresses. The scripting side of an audio description track is a writing commission too, and it is a real, separate piece of work from recording the track.

Not an agency, a casting desk or a job board

This directory will hold no job posting, run no callout and take no brief. That is not modesty; it is the structural reason it can never turn into an auction. A platform can only run a bidding war over work it is holding, and this one will not be holding any.

Everything the established directories do, minus the parts that exist to be sold, plus the parts none of them carry

This compares against the model, not against a company. No competitor is named anywhere on this site, and describing a category accurately does not require naming one. The claim is specific and checkable: cover what the general voice listings cover, drop the mechanisms that are products sold to the listee rather than services to the visitor, and add the three fields the category does not carry at all — pacing, reading style as a held register, and language as a reads-in claim.

The two rows worth reading first are ranking and rates. That is where a directory’s incentives usually stop matching the visitor’s, and where a narrator has already been burned.
CapabilityThe established modelHere
Find a voice by craftUsually one pooled category covering commercials, character work, corporate reads and long-form narration together, filtered down from the same list.Three long-form crafts kept structurally separate, with the boundary between each pair written out, plus a named address for the character work that is deliberately not here.
Search by reading styleRarely a real field. Style is usually inferred by the buyer from a demo reel, or approximated with adjectives attached to a whole profile.A first-class field, defined as the register a narrator can hold for hours rather than a genre tag or a personality adjective.
Search by pacingEffectively absent across the category.A first-class field, because a read-aloud for a six-year-old, a dense non-fiction chapter and a described track for a fast-cut drama are three different speeds and one person is rarely right for all three.
LanguageCommonly a single checkbox per language, which collapses reads unfamiliar text aloud fluently, speaks it, and can perform the accent into one claim.Languages READ IN, which is the strict form of the claim, with the regional variety treated as part of the field rather than as a note underneath it.
Audio description as its own disciplineNot modelled. Description work is listed as narration with a different script, which misses that the script is written to the gaps and the timing is not negotiable.Modelled as a separate craft with its own deliverable, its own unit of work and its own failure mode, because a public-sector buyer procuring against a criterion is not shopping for a narrator in general.
Ranking and placementRanked, and position is frequently purchasable. The ranking is a product sold to the listee, not a service to the visitor.None. There is no rank field in the record shape published above, so there is no position to sell and none to game.
Rates and biddingRates published or solicited, and in the worst version a job is posted and narrators bid against each other, which moves the price in exactly one direction. No rate field, no bid, no job posting held anywhere in the system. The directory routes; it does not broker. That is a property of the architecture, not a promise about conduct.
Membership and pay-to-be-findableA paid tier is the usual business model, and being findable at all is often the thing being sold back to the listee. No price is set and none is quoted on this page. What is committed is the shape: whatever a listing eventually costs will be stated in full before anyone is asked for anything, and it will never buy position.
Reviews and ratingsPresent, and generally unverifiable in both directions.None, deliberately. This directory cannot verify that a review came from a real booking, so publishing one would mean publishing something it cannot stand behind.
Lead captureCommon, and the enquiry is frequently the actual product -- routed or resold to several listees at once.None. There is no form on this page and nothing is captured. A visitor leaves for whoever they chose, and this address does not learn who they were.
Position on synthetic and cloned voicesUsually unstated, and increasingly the same operator sells both the human listing and the synthetic alternative.Stated, and stated as a refusal with a mechanism behind it: no synthetic voice is listed as a narrator, and no audio is hosted at this address at all today.
Honesty about what is actually builtA new directory that is empty typically looks populated, using placeholder profiles, sample listings or a founding-member count.A status table, on the page, whose default state is NOT BUILT, listing zero listings as zero and marking search, profiles, audio, messaging and payments as absent.

Four of those rows are subtractions rather than additions, and that is deliberate. A ranking you can buy, a bid you can be undercut in, an enquiry that gets resold, and a star nobody can verify are all features for whoever is being sold to, and costs to everybody else. Removing them is the competitive move, not a gap in the product.

The three objections a working narrator has, and what actually answers each one

These are not straw objections chosen because they are easy. They are the three reasons an experienced narrator closes a directory tab, and every one of them is grounded in something the category has actually done. Each answer below is followed by what it does not fix, because an objection answered without its remaining edge is an advertisement, and you would be right to discount it.

“Every directory in this business ends up charging me to be findable, and then puts whoever paid most at the top.”

Objection one: pay-to-play, and the ranking that follows it

The answer is not a promise, because a promise is what every directory offers on the way in. It is a structure, and you can check it from outside. The complete field list for a listing is published above, before a single listing exists. There is no rank field, no score, no featured tier and no position in it. A directory cannot sell an ordering it does not compute, and adding one later would mean adding a field to a list that is already written down on this page.

The listing order, when there is anything to order, will be a stated boring rule published on the page — not a judgement, not relevance, not a score. A rule you can read is a rule you can catch us breaking. A relevance score is not, which is precisely why the category prefers one.

The refusals further down are written in the same style for the same reason: each is specific enough that you could tell, from this page alone, if it stopped being true. “We put users first” is not falsifiable. “There is no rank field” is.

What this does not fix. The honest limit: no price is set for a listing, and this page will not pretend one has been decided. What is committed is that whatever it costs will be stated in full before anyone is asked for anything, and that paying will never move you up a list, because there is no list position to move.

“Directories turn into auctions, and auctions destroy the rate. I am not bidding against somebody offering to do a whole book for what I charge for an hour.”

Objection two: the race to the bottom

This one is answered architecturally rather than ethically, because an ethical answer is worth nothing when the incentive changes. A platform can only run a bidding war over work that it holds. It needs the job posting to sit inside it, so that several people can be shown the same brief and asked what they would do it for.

This directory holds no job postings. There is no callout, no brief intake, no project board and no enquiry routing anywhere in the record shape or in the status table. A buyer who finds somebody here contacts them directly and the arrangement is made between the two of them, off this address entirely. There is nothing here for a bid to attach to.

There is also no rate field, in either direction. This directory does not publish what you charge and does not ask a buyer for a budget, because a budget field on an enquiry is the same auction wearing different clothes: it sorts people by price before anybody has discussed the work.

What this does not fix. The honest limit: this cannot protect your rate. Nothing on a web page can. What it can do is decline to build the machine that lowers it, and be specific enough about the absence — no job posting, no bid, no rate field, no budget field — that you can verify the machine is not there rather than take our word for the intention.

“If I put a bio and a demo here, am I feeding a voice model? Does my voice end up as somebody else’s product?”

Objection three: synthetic voice, cloning, and what happens to your audio

The strongest part of this answer is not a policy. It is the current state of the system: no audio is hosted at this address at all. There is no upload, no player, no demo store and no reel. That is on the status table above marked NOT BUILT, and it is the honest reason this answer can be as flat as it is — there is nothing here to feed anything, because there is nothing here.

The policy behind it, stated in the scoped form rather than as a slogan: material posted to this directory is never sold, and it is never fed to an outside AI to train on. That is a claim about what this business does with what you give it, and it is deliberately narrower than the absolute the category likes to use.

And a listing refusal that follows from it: a synthetic or cloned voice is not a narrator and will not be listed as one. Not as a profile, not as an option beside a person, and not as a cheaper tier under one. If this address ever has anything to say about synthetic audio, it will be as a separate, labelled thing, and never as a substitute presented in the same list as human beings.

What this does not fix. The honest limit, and it is the reason the first paragraph is the real answer: a public web page can be read by anything that reads public web pages. No site can truthfully promise that a bio nobody can see is also a bio nobody can copy. That limit is exactly why audio is not hosted here at launch. A promise about the safety of audio we were holding is a promise this page is not currently in a position to keep, so it is not making one, and it is not holding the audio.

What is running and what is not built, with nothing rounded up

A new directory that is empty usually still manages to look populated: placeholder profiles, a sample listing, a founding-member count, a waitlist number that goes up. Every one of those is a fabricated success state, and once a page has told you one of them you cannot trust the rest of it. So the state of this address is a table, its default is not built, and a row only says running if you can verify it from the page you are on right now.

Three rows say running. Six say not built. That ratio is the honest description of this address today.
CapabilityStateWhat that means exactly
This address, and this pageRunningThe domain resolves and serves this page, which is the page it should have been serving all along. You are reading the evidence for this row.
The brief -- what will be listed and how it will be organisedRunningThe three crafts, the three organising fields and the fields deliberately left out are all written down above. That is a real, checkable commitment you can hold this address to later.
An early-access mailboxRunningA message to the address in the button reaches a person. It is a mailbox, not a queue position: there is no waitlist, no number and nothing to be ahead of.
Any listing at allNot builtZero. Not a small number, not a founding cohort, not a private beta with names in it. There is no narrator listed on this address, and there is no hidden list behind a login either.
The searchable directoryNot builtThere is no search box on this page because there is nothing to search. Filtering by reading style, pacing and language is the product, and it does not exist yet.
Profiles, and any way to claim oneNot builtNo profile page exists, and there is no self-serve claim, no account, no login and no dashboard behind this domain.
Audio hosting -- demos, samples, reelsNot builtNo audio is stored at this address. That is worth reading twice before the section on voice models below, because it is the honest reason the answer there is as strong as it is.
Enquiries, messaging or introductionsNot builtThere is no contact form on a listing, because there is no listing. Nothing on this page captures who you are or what you were looking for.
Payments, membership, commissionNot builtNo checkout runs on this domain and no card is charged here. No listing price is set, and none is quoted anywhere on this page.

No date is attached to any of the not-built rows. A date on this page would be a commitment made to you by somebody who cannot keep it on your behalf, and a missed date on a trust page costs more than the absent feature did.

What this directory refuses to do, and why each refusal is worth more to you than a feature

A directory earns trust by what it declines to monetise, and a refusal is only worth something if it is specific enough to catch us breaking it. Each line below names a mechanism rather than a value, so that its absence is observable from outside. Vague good intentions are unfalsifiable, and unfalsifiable is the same as unenforceable.

  • It will never run an auction, hold a job posting, or take a bid. This is the refusal the other refusals rest on. Bidding is only possible where the platform holds the work, and this one holds none, so the mechanism that drives long-form rates down cannot be built here without visibly adding an entire feature that is absent from the record shape and the status table above.

  • It will never rank, score, or sell a featured position. There is no rank field in the published record shape, so there is nothing to sell and nothing to game. If ordering ever matters, the rule will be stated on the page in plain words rather than computed out of sight.

  • It will never publish your rate. A rate on a directory is the first half of an auction and the listee is the one who pays for it. What you charge is between you and the person hiring you, and it is not a field this directory has any business holding.

  • It will never publish a review, a rating or a star. It cannot verify that a review came from a real booking. In a trade small enough that a handful of manufactured reviews moves real work, publishing something unverifiable is worse than publishing nothing.

  • It will never capture, route or resell an enquiry. There is no form on this page and nothing is captured. A directory that resells your enquiry is being paid by the very people you were choosing between, and it stops working for you the moment that revenue exists.

  • It will never list a synthetic or cloned voice as a narrator. Not as a profile, not as an option beside a person, not as a cheaper tier underneath one. A listing here means a human being read the text. Placing a synthetic option in the same list as people is how a directory turns its own listees into a price anchor.

  • It will never list a child reader. Not ever, under any consent. The read-aloud craft names lower grades as the AUDIENCE, never as the reader. This directory lists adult professionals who are hired to read to children. A recording made by a student is not a listing here, no consent makes it one, and there is no mechanism to submit one because the question is closed rather than gated.

  • It will never award a verified, vetted or credentialed badge. This platform runs no background-check bureau, no credential check and no union roster. A badge that stands for nothing is worse than no badge, because it transfers a judgement you would otherwise have made yourself onto something that never made it.

  • It will never host your audio in order to have audio to hold. If audio hosting is ever built, it will be because it makes a listing genuinely more useful to you, and it will arrive with the training, resale and retention terms attached before the upload button. A directory that collects voice recordings because collecting them is valuable has an interest that is not yours.

  • It will never become an agency, a casting desk or a marketplace. The moment it takes a cut of the work, every organising decision on it becomes a decision about revenue. It is a directory. Its entire output is helping one person find another person and then getting out of the way.

Adult professionals, children as the audience, and the line between them

One of the three crafts here involves children, and it involves them as listeners. Because that is easy to blur and expensive to get wrong, it is written out rather than left to be inferred.

Everyone listed is an adult professional

A narrator lists themselves, by choice, as a contractor advertising a trade. There is no student here, no class, no roster and no school record in frame anywhere on this address, and no student-records framing applies to any of it.

Lower grades is the audience, never the reader

A recorded read-aloud for lower grades is an adult reading to children. This directory does not list child readers, does not accept a recording made by a student as a listing, and does not provide a consent path that would turn one into a listing. The question is closed, not gated, because a gate is a thing that can be opened by whoever is standing next to it under pressure.

No child appears on this address at all

No photograph, no name, no recording and no data belonging to a minor is collected, stored or displayed here. There is no capture mechanic on this domain of any kind, and nothing on it processes an image or a voice for identification.

This is not a school procurement page

A district appears here in exactly one role: as somebody buying audio description because they have an accessibility obligation. That is one of four audiences and it is not the frame. If you arrived looking for a school platform, this is not one, and this page will not attempt to convert you into a lead for something else — serving the wrong audience a confident page is the specific defect this address was built to stop committing.

For the buyer with an obligation: what you are actually procuring

Audio description sits in a different position from the other two crafts because it is often not discretionary. A public-sector buyer commissioning a described track is usually procuring against a written criterion — in the WCAG 2.1 scheme, criterion 1.2.3 at Level A and criterion 1.2.5, prerecorded audio description, at Level AA — and the thing being bought is conformance work with a person’s voice attached to it.

Naming those is a statement about your obligation, not a claim about this address. This page does not certify conformance, does not audit it, does not issue a statement of accessibility for anybody, and would not be a valid basis for one. There is no compliance product here at all. What a directory can honestly do for that purchase is narrow and worth stating exactly: help you find a person who can do the work, and carry the fields that let you tell whether they can.

Those fields are the ones already listed above, and their relevance to this purchase is direct. Pacing decides whether the description fits the gaps in your programme without being read too fast to follow. Languages read in decides whether your community gets a described track in the language they actually use, read by somebody fluent enough to read unfamiliar text aloud at speed rather than somebody who studied it. Reading style decides whether the description sits underneath the programme or fights it. A general voice listing carries none of the three, which is why choosing a describer from one is mostly guesswork wearing a filter.

One more thing that belongs to you rather than to us: description quality is judged by the people who use it. The most useful step in this procurement is not on this page or any other directory — it is having described output reviewed by blind and low-vision users before it is signed off. No directory field is a substitute for that, and any page that implies otherwise is selling you a shortcut that does not exist.

How the money works, stated plainly and stated short

Nothing on this page is for sale, there is no advertising on it, and no checkout runs on this domain. No card can be charged at this address today, because the mechanism to charge one is not built here.

No listing price has been set, and none is quoted anywhere on this page. That is the honest state, and it is stated instead of the more comfortable alternatives — a “free forever” that nobody can commit to, or a “free while in early access” that quietly implies a decided price arriving later. Neither is true, so neither is here.

What is committed is the shape rather than the number. Whatever a listing eventually costs will be stated in full, in advance, before anyone is asked for anything. It will never buy position, because there is no position to buy. And it will never be a condition of appearing at all in a way that turns being findable into the product, because that model is the reason the first objection above exists.

This is a for-profit business. Nothing here is a charitable gift, nothing on it is deductible, and it is not framed as either.

Questions, including the ones that are awkward to answer

Why would I join a directory with nobody in it?

You possibly would not, and that is a reasonable position to hold. What this page can offer instead of a population number is the field list, the refusals and the status table, all published before there is anything to lose by publishing them. A directory that writes down what it will never do while it is still empty is easier to hold to it than one that discovers its principles after it has traffic. If you would rather wait until it has people in it, wait. Nothing here is time-limited and there is no founding tier to miss.

How many narrators are listed right now?

Zero. Not a few, not a founding cohort, not a private list behind a login. There is no listing at this address and no hidden one either. If that number ever changes, the status table above is where it changes first.

Is there a waitlist, and what position am I in?

There is no waitlist and therefore no position. The early-access link is a mailbox, not a queue. A queue number would be a small manufactured urgency, and manufactured urgency on a page whose whole argument is honesty would undo the argument.

What happens when I send an early-access message?

It reaches a mailbox and a person reads it. There is no automated sequence, no account created, no card requested and nothing to confirm. If it would help, say which of the three crafts you work in and which languages you read in, because those are the fields the directory is being built around and real answers shape it more usefully than opinions about it.

How is this different from the character voice address you keep mentioning?

That address is for character and animation work, where the hire is a casting decision about range judged from a performance. This one is for long-form reading, where the hire turns on stamina, consistency across sessions and pronunciation discipline. The same person can genuinely do both, and would list on both, but a buyer arriving for one is not choosing on the criteria that matter for the other. Neither address carries a listing today.

Will you rank me, or can I pay to appear higher?

No, and no. There is no rank field in the record shape published on this page, which means there is nothing to compute and nothing to sell. If ordering ever matters, the ordering rule will be printed on the page in plain words so you can check it.

Will this become a place where people bid for work?

It cannot, without a visible structural change. Bidding requires the platform to hold the job posting so that several people can be shown the same brief. This directory holds no postings, runs no callouts and takes no briefs. Buyers contact narrators directly and the arrangement happens off this address entirely.

Are you going to use my voice to train an AI?

No audio is hosted at this address at all, so at present there is nothing to use. The standing commitment is the scoped one: material posted here is never sold and never fed to an outside AI to train on. The honest limit is that a public web page can be read by anything that reads public web pages, which is exactly why audio is not hosted here at launch rather than hosted with a reassuring promise attached.

Will synthetic voices be listed alongside human narrators?

No. A synthetic or cloned voice is not a narrator and will not be listed as one, as a profile, as an option beside a person, or as a cheaper tier under one. Putting a synthetic option in the same list as people turns the people in that list into a price anchor, which is a thing being done to them rather than for them.

Do you verify or vet the narrators?

No, and no page in this estate claims otherwise. This platform runs no background-check bureau, no credential check and no union roster, so there is no verified badge here and there will not be one. What a listing establishes is that a person put their own name to a set of claims about their trade. That is a real signal and it is not a substitute for listening to their work and agreeing terms in writing.

Can I hire someone through this page?

Not through it, no. When the directory opens you will be able to find someone and contact them directly. This address never sits between the two of you, takes no cut, holds no contract and handles no payment, which is also why it never has a reason to prefer one narrator over another.

Why is pacing a field when nobody else has one?

Because it is the field that decides a long-form hire and it is invisible in a demo reel. A reel is somebody's best ninety seconds and it demonstrates range, which is the right instrument for character casting and the wrong one here. Whether a narrator can hold an unhurried pace across a thirty-hour book, or write to a two-second gap, or slow down for a six-year-old without sliding into a sing-song register, is not a thing ninety edited seconds can show you.

What does languages read in mean, and why not just say speaks?

Because they are different capabilities and conflating them is how a track ends up unusable. Reading unfamiliar text aloud, fluently, at speed, with correct stress and without stumbling, is a narrower skill than conversational fluency and much narrower than performing an accent. The regional variety is part of the field rather than a note under it, because a buyer serving a specific community is choosing on exactly that.

Is this an accessibility compliance service?

No. This page names the criteria a public-sector buyer procures against because that is the buyer's own obligation, and it makes no conformance claim of any kind for anybody. There is no audit here, no certification, no accessibility statement issued and no compliance product. It is a directory for finding a person who does the work.

Are children ever listed as narrators?

No, under any circumstance and under any consent. Lower grades names the audience, never the reader. Everyone listed is an adult professional advertising a trade, there is no path to submit a recording made by a student, and no consent turns one into a listing. The question is closed rather than gated.

I typed this domain before and got a page about school software. What was that?

A real defect, and this page is the fix. The domain resolved and served a complete, valid, well-built page belonging to an entirely different product, because it had no page of its own and fell through to a default. It is written up in the second section of this page rather than quietly corrected, because a live address serving the wrong brand is worse than one that does not answer: the visitor gets a confident wrong answer instead of an honest silence.

Everything this page is claiming, in one place

The Narrator Directory is an early-access address with zero listings. It is not a live directory, not a populated one, not a searchable one and not a private beta with names in it. There is no narrator listed here, no profile, no roster, no waitlist, no member count, no review, no rating, no ranking and no testimonial — and none of those is invented anywhere on this page, because there is nothing behind this address to describe. The one example listing above is labelled illustrative and there is no person behind it. No search runs here, no audio is stored here, no account exists here, no enquiry is captured here, and no checkout runs here. No listing price has been set and none is quoted. The status table is the authoritative statement of what is built, its default is not built, and six of its nine rows say so.

What the page commits to is a shape, and it commits to it in a form you can check: the full field list a listing will carry, published before any listing exists; the fields it refuses to carry, each with the mechanism that makes the refusal real rather than aspirational; and ten standing refusals written so that their absence is observable from outside. It will not run an auction, hold a job posting, take a bid, rank, score, sell placement, publish a rate, publish a review, capture or resell an enquiry, award a verified badge, list a synthetic or cloned voice as a narrator, or list a child reader under any consent. Material posted here is never sold and never fed to an outside AI to train on — a claim about what this business does, deliberately narrower than an unbreakable-perimeter absolute, because a public page can be read by anything that reads public pages, and that limit is the reason no audio is hosted here at launch.

The craft specifics on this page are general, checkable properties of the trade and not statistics about this business: no adoption figure, no customer count and no performance number appears anywhere on it, because none would be real. Where an accessibility criterion is named it describes a buyer’s obligation; this address certifies nothing, audits nothing and issues no accessibility statement. Everyone who will be listed is an adult professional listing themselves by choice; there is no student, no class, no roster and no school record in frame, and no image, voice or data belonging to a minor is collected, stored or processed at this address in any form. No competitor, marketplace or voice-AI company is named anywhere on this site. This is a for-profit business and nothing on it is a charitable gift.
